Amhara is a region in northern Ethiopia with high rates of poverty, malnutrition and illiteracy, conditions that particularly affect women.
Here, eight out of ten girls do not go on to secondary school, hampered by a misogynistic culture, difficult access to educational materials and the absence of school facilities. The only secondary school is in Wuchale, but it is tens of kilometres from the villages in the district and there are no means of reaching it.
For girls in Ethiopia, not going to school means being condemned to a life of abuse, marriage, early pregnancy and illegal migration.
Through this project we want to empower women and fight gender discrimination in schooling in Ethiopia by enhancing the skills and role of women within communities. The objectives of the programme are:
With TUTTE A SCUOLA! we facilitate the education of the most deserving and needy girls and young women by supporting their entire schooling - from primary to secondary education and on to university. We do this through child sponsorship, accommodation in a residence in Wuchale and financial support for school expenses.
Each girl in the project is supported in her studies by project workers, in cooperation with local institutions.
Since 2012, TUTTE A SCUOLA! has ensured a proper education for more than 160 girls in Ethiopia. Thanks to donations, child sponsorship programme and efficient management of the Wuchale residence, we have:
