Hate speech is increasingly present at a social level, both on social networks and at a political level. Its spreading creates serious problems for categories of people who, because of their religion, sexual orientation, geographical origin or disability, are more vulnerable. However, a more general problem exists and it concerns the progressive worsening of relationships between people,  who are becoming more aggressive and less sensitive for the respect of others.

HELP US SPREAD A CULTURE OF NON-DISCRIMINATION

CONTEXT
THE SPREADING OF
HATE SPEECH IN ITALY

Global Citizenship Education, an area in which #IORISPETTO is inserted, acts through a participatory methodology that is integrated into a wider context such as school, family and neighborhood, where the voices of the children involved are the main actors of the activities carried out.

TARGET
INVOLVE YOUNG PEOPLE IN FIGHTING DISCRIMINATION

The project aims at raising awareness of students, teachers, intercultural mediators and human rights activists on the consequences of the proliferation of hate speech. Through educational methodologies, we promote inclusive ways of relating inside the school context and at city level.

HOW WE ACT
LEARNING COURSES WITH HATE SPEECH EXPERTS

Classes participating work using educational kits with activation proposals even outside school hours and have the possibility to meet with intercultural mediators with whom to reason, among others, on topics such as religion, migratory paths, interculturality.

RESULTS
INCLUSIVE ACTIVITIES TO EDUCATE TO RESPECT

The project aims at involving at least ten thousand students in the educational programs; at least half of them involve participating in mobilizations for the defense of human rights. Specific courses are also created, with innovative methodologies for teachers; we also consolidate the coordination of a network of intercultural mediators trained on a national scale.

STORIES
TOGETHER AGAINST HATE SPEECH
MARIA ELENA

Maria Elena is a middle school teacher from Palermo, engaged for many years in human rights education projects with her classes. Together with other colleagues she organizes and participates with her students in various initiatives aiming at creating a more inclusive society.
She believes in the importance to work with young people by promoting cooperative activities. Hate speech also arises from competition, which prevents seeing a possible ally in the other to pursue common goals.

JENNIFER

Jennifer is an intercultural mediator from Ghana who works in Turin. She sees a higher awareness of hate speech, bullying and cyber bullying than he expected, in middle school classes.
She believes that the path that allows to get out of prejudice is neither easy nor short, but that participatory activities and theatrical methodologies can help people put themselves in the other person's perspective. She thinks the biggest obstacle lies in the difficulty that people have to open up, something that would help them discover that they are more similar to each other than they think.

SIMONE

Simone is a middle school student who lives in Palermo. Thanks to #iorispetto, he was able to deal with topics such as the veil in the Muslim religion, about which he understood he had prejudices.
He thinks it is important to promote the encounter with diversity, which allows you to face your points of view in a positive comparison with people who come from different  life experiences. Without this comparison there can be no growth.
