HELP US STOP HATE SPEECH ON LINE

CONTEXT
A COUNTRY AFFECTED
BY HATE SPEECH
AND FAKE NEWS

Hate speech in our country is now a consolidated reality, fueled by the growing use of the internet and the proliferation of fake news; the Web has the highest incidence of racist behavior (84%), compared to traditional media (ISTAT, 2011). Often, we find ourselves unprepared to face it, because we do not know the dynamics that allow it to spread on the net and we tend to experience the attack as an individual problem. Instead, it is important to realize that only through joint action is it possible to prevent the hate speech from spreading out of control and, for those close to us, to suffer the consequences.

TARGET
EDUCATE YOUNG PEOPLE
TO RECOGNIZE HATE
SPEECH ONLINE

The #hatetrackers project, which will start in 2020, was created with the aim of fighting the spread of online hate speech, increasing the ability of young people and communities to react to hate speech. Through the involvement of secondary and university students, teachers and all those who take care of the growth of children - such as parents, sports coaches, educators and religious authorities - online and offline activation proposals will be built, to counteract the diffusion of hate speech and fake news throughout the territory.

HOW WE WORK
INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS
ON HATE SPEECH
FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

To effectively fight the spread of hate speech online, the project proposes participatory methodologies, which are integrated in the school context and in the broader contexts of family and neighborhood. Educational courses will be activated within the extracurricular classes and workshops, dedicated to the debate around the topics of hate speech, analysis and recognition of fake news. Specific interactive activities will be organized, aimed at analyzing different contexts and particular cases, developing proposals for actions that can be immediately implemented.

RESULTS
BUILD A  MORE INCLUSIVE SOCIETY STARTING
FROM YOUNG PEOPLE

With #hatetrackers we want to involve over five thousand students from Italian schools in the proposed educational and laboratory courses, to spread a culture of non-discrimination based on the recognition of fake news and hate speech online. Numerous proposed activities will be complemented by cultural events and moments of mobilization for the defense of human rights. Specific courses are also planned, with innovative methodologies for teachers and working groups on fighting hate speech and the spread of fake news in at least three Italian cities.
