We want to improve the lives of vulnerable people by reducing the impact of plastics on the environment in the city of Hawassa, in Ethiopia. The collection and sale of plastic bottles become an additional source of income for waste collectors and a reason for learning and reflecting on the damage created by plastic for the entire community. Furthermore, the technical assistance provided to Hawassa municipality on the management of solid urban waste intends to improve the entire collection system.

TO CLEAN THE PLASTIC ISLAND

CONTEXT
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT
TO REDUCE PLASTIC
IN AWASSA

Waste management in Ethiopia is critical. The use of PET has grown enormously due to the increase of consumption of water and soft drinks in bottles and the gradual conversion from glass to PET. Deficiencies of the waste collection system cause dispersion in the environment and the accumulation of plastic in waterways, residential areas, roads, sewers, with the consequent clogging of canals, floods, reduction of the capacity of the land to retain water and increased soil sterility. The practice of burning waste further worsens the general picture.

TARGET
HELP PEOPLE AND
THE ENVIRONMENT
BY RECYCLING WASTE

The project intends to exploit the economic value of plastic to be recycled to economically strengthen vulnerable people and to raise awareness of young people in particular, and of the entire community on the issue of environmental protection.

The municipality of Hawassa will have guidelines to improve waste management. An entire community is involved to have a cleaner city without plastic bottles (PET) in the environment.

WHAT WE ACT
AN INVOLVING AND
EFFECTIVE WASTE
RECYCLING CHAIN

RESULTS
A SUCCESS THAT GIVES HOPE TO THE COMMUNITY
