HELP US TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN IN CAMBODIA

CONTEXT
AN AREA OF CAMBODIA
WITH
HIGH RATES
OF CHILD POVERTY

Today in Cambodia many children are not entitled to a happy childhood; over 18% of minors are involved in exploitation activities and 79% of them do not have access to education.

In Phoum Thmey, a district of the city of Sihanoukville, the situation is particularly critic: the recent development of the touristic sector has risen the expansion of the port, with the relocation of thousands of poor families in degraded suburbs.

The Phoum Thmey community lives in conditions of extreme poverty, and children's rights are not protected; essential care, respect and right to study are deprived, essential conditions for building a dignified future.

TARGET
GUARANTEE THE RIGHTS
OF CHILDREN IN NEED
IN CAMBODIA

“Via del Campo” was born in 2010 to guarantee the rights of children with extremely problematic family situations living in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, removing them from the streets and protecting them from harmful and dangerous contexts. Specifically, we want to:

  • be a point of reference for the entire community by offering assistance, orientation and support;
  • offer children  health care that can ensure them adequate health;
  • ensure them a daily food support;
  • encourage schooling of children;
  • create a context of respect, collaboration, play, education and affection.
HOW WE ACT
A SAFE PLACE
TO EAT, PLAY, STUDY

With our project, for over ten years we have carried out many activities in the suburbs of Phoum Thmey, in Sihanoukville, with the aim of saving children from living conditions that harm human rights and that prevent them from building a decent life.

  • we have created a day care center; a safe place that welcomes, each year, 100 children in difficulty;
  • we guarantee access to primary school, offering a learning support program, with English lessons and with the organization of recreational activities;
  • we are committed to guarantee one meal a day and access to health care;
  • raise awareness among families on good hygiene and health practices and the importance of education to escape the spiral of poverty.

RESULTS
A REFERENCE POINT
FOR THE SIHANOUKVILLE COMMUNITY

To date, with Via del Campo we have created a welcoming, familiar and safe space for many Cambodian children in conditions of poverty and at risk of exploitation.
Our center has become an important point of reference for the community living in the neighborhood of Phoum Thmey, in Sihanoukville.
In its ten years of operation, the center has hosted over a thousand Cambodian minors, removing them from the streest and protecting them from a risky and harmful context.
Thanks to the center of Via del Campo, the rights of the children of Phoum Thmey are respected, their education is guaranteed together with their health.

STORIES
A REFERENCE POINT FOR THE SIHANOUKVILLE COMMUNITY
NARO

When he received his first bicycle in 2010, Theuk Naro wrote to us saying: “I can finally go to school by bike ... I promise you that I will work hard and study so that I will not disappoint you and achieve my goals”. Over the years Naro participated enthusiastically in all the activities and was the best of his course; today, thanks to the support of 2 families, he has enrolled in university.

SIMEY

Sun Simey was included in the program in 2009, when she was in her fourth grade. Her dream was to become a doctor and she has always attended lessons regularly, achieving excellent results. Today she is enrolled in the 1st year of university at the Faculty of Economics and Finance.

CHIARA

Chiara is a teacher who collaborated on the Via del Campo project. For her, dedicating herself to educating the most vulnerable children and contributing to their growth is not just a job; it's a mission. Children are her life and according to her “in Cambodia, only with them, with their education, we can build a better nation and a society that respects the rights of children”.
